Daitokuji hōjō teien
大徳寺方丈庭園

garden at the abbot's quarters of Daitokuji temple

The abbot's quarters of the main temple of Daitokuji were built in 1635, and the garden was made at about the same time. The south garden is a dry landscape garden with a dry waterfall in the southeast, made by standing two large stones upright and representing a dry stream under them with flat stones. The rest of the garden is paved with white pebbles, so that official ceremonies can be held there. The east garden has five groups of stone arrangements placed on a paving of white pebbles, and the view of Mt. Hiei is also incorporated into the garden as borrowed scenery. The garden is designated a national historic site and special scenic spot, and is located in Kita ward, Kyoto.
