karetaki
枯滝

dry waterfall

A gardening technique in which a waterfall is suggested by a group of stones and white sand without using water. Falling water is usually symbolized by the mirror stone, and flowing water by white sand. The technique appeared in the Muromachi period, and the one at the garden at the shoin of the Daisen'in temple is a typical example. A dry waterfall is sometimes attached to a pond garden.
