abbot's quarters

The head abbot's quarters in a Zen temple. Its name means "a square of ten feet to a side," the traditional size of the abbot's sitting room. It is normally in a rectangular building divided into two rows of three rooms, with the row on the front having a wide veranda, and the middle room on that side, the abbot's quarters, furnished with an altar on its inner wall. The main garden is usually designed to be most picturesque when looked at from this room.
