Photomap Images of the Takamatsuzuka Tomb Murals
Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties
Publications on Historical Materials Volume 81
This volume contains technical research report on making of photomap images of the Takamatsuzuka tomb murals prior to its dismantling repair.
It is not able to make a measured drawing without any contact to an object.
Photogrammetry is a non-contact method for making an accurate image oil the other hand; however, it is hard to achieve a precise picture like an actual -measured drawing. Laser three-dimensional measuring system is not suitable for a two-dimensional object such as a mural painting.
Any direct contacts were not allowed to obtain measured drawings and accurate images in the case of the Takamatsuzuka tomb murals. Conventional method such as actual measurement, photogrammetry, and three-dimensional measurement were not applicable there. Then, we tried to apply the method of photomap.
The photomap achieves a precise and accurate image of the original object without any contacts, converting and synthesizing several photo images. This photomap measures to an accuracy of ± 2 mm between two measurement points calibrating 1,000 mm. This photomap is so precise to record original status of the stone chamber of the Takamatsuzuka tomb and to offer fundamental data to assess the conservation state of the murals in the wake of its dismantlement.
