Late and Final Jomon Pottery and Early Yayoi Pottery from the Tarusawa Site, Fukuoka Town, Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture

This series of catalogues publishes archaeological materials collected by the late Dr. YAMANOUCHI Sugao [1902-1970]. He was a prominent prehistorian who firmly established the methodological framework of investigations into Japanese prehistory, particularly the Jomon Period. His collection principally consists of archaeological data resulting from his own excavations at Jomon sites in eastern Japan.
This volume focuses on pottery excavated at the Tarusawa site, Fukuoka Town, Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific coast of the northeastern mainland Japan. The purpose of Yamanouchi’s excavation was to gain better understanding about typological changes of pottery from the Jomon to Yayoi Periods in this region. He also attempted to test his chronological framework against stratigraphic contexts. His resulting collection includes early to late stages of the Late Jomon pottery, middle to final stages of the Final Jomon pottery, and early to late types of the Yayoi pottery. Owing to this publication, evolution of pottery from the Late Jomon to Yayoi Periods in this region has become clear. Stylistic comparison of the Tarusawa site pottery with those of other regions of Japan reveal that residents of the Tarusawa site interacted with many different regions, and interacting partners changed over time. It is noteworthy in this context that an early type Yayoi pottery was brought all the way from northern Kyushu.
