rocky seashore

A general term for a rocky seashore. In Japanese gardens the term indicates pond shore edging in which stones or a stone arrangement represent such a seascape. This design had already been adopted in the garden of the Shima palace of Prince Kusakabe at the end of the seventh century, according to a poem in the ancient Man'yōshū anthology.
