Manpukuji teien
万福寺庭園

garden at Manpukuji temple

A pond garden built in the Muromachi period. One theory holds it was designed by the famous priest painter Sesshū, but this is not certain. It has a gently-sloping artificial hill placed behind the pond. At its top there is a stone arrangement centered on a triangular upright stone, with the lower portion of the arrangment serving symbolically as a dry waterfall facing the pond. It is designated a national scenic spot and located in the city of Masuda, Shimane prefecture.
