Kyū Hama rikyū teien
旧浜離宮庭園

garden at the former Hama detached palace

A garden at Hama palace, a detached mansion of the Tokugawa shogun family. The name Hama rikyū was adopted after it became a detached palace over which the Imperial Household Ministry held jurisdiction in the Meiji period. The garden was first built in the early Edo period when it was a mansion of the Kōfu domain, and was renovated by succesive shoguns after it became a detached mansion of the shogunal family in 1704. It faces Tokyo bay and is famous as a sea inlet garden which introduces seawater into the pond. The views of scenery within the garden and on the outside, seen from artificial hills such as Ochin'yama and Fujimiyama, are outstanding. Two ponds, Kōshindō and Shinzeniza, are rare surviving examples of duck-decoying ponds of the Edo period. The garden is designated a national special historic site and special scenic spot, and is located in Chūō ward, Tokyo.
