shioiri no niwa
潮入の庭

sea inlet garden

A garden, located at seaside, which draws sea water into its pond. This technique was often used in daimyo gardens of the Edo period; such gardens may be designed so that the scenery changes with the fluctuation in water level of the tides. The gardens at the former Hama detached palace (photo) in Tokyo and Yōsuien in Wakayama City are well-known examples.
