kamo ike
鴨池

duck-decoying pond

A pond made by feudal lords in the Edo period for netting ducks as a recreational sport. The pond, containing a central island, is surrounded with thickly planted, high banks of irregular form, and has small estuaries called hikibori radiating outward from it. Wild ducks are decoyed into the estuaries and netted. In addition to being made in daimyo gardens, the one at the garden of the former Hama detached palace is well known. It is also called kamoba or kamobiki ike.
