A garden designed to highlight the four seasons by its combination of directions and plants. It originated in the shinden style gardens of the Heian period, based on the doctrine of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. The garden of Kaya no In, the residence of Fujiwara no Yorimichi in the Heian period, is well known.
