Kaya no In garden remains

Kaya no In is a large-scaled shinden residence, built by Fujiwara no Yorimichi in the Heian period (mid-eleventh century) on a lot within the Heian capital approximately 240 meters square. It is said in Eiga monogatari and the diaries of aristocrats of those days to be a four seasons garden, with rare plants and big stones, and ponds in all directions from the main hall, and a fishing pavilion built on the central island of the pond. In recent years, excavations have uncovered pebble beaches of the pond, and other features. It was located in present Kamigyō ward, Kyoto.
