shinden style garden

A garden attached to a shinden style mansion, belonging to an aristocrat or imperial family member in the Heian period. According to Sakuteiki, there was an open space in front of the main hall (shinden), where various kinds of rites and events were held. A pond containing an island or islands was placed to the south of this, with an arched bridge spanning obliquely to the island, and a flat bridge built farther away.
