suisekitei
水石庭

suisekitei; water-and-stone garden

A small garden made at aristocratic residences in the Heian period. It was composed of a small body of water or a yarimizu stream, some stones, herbs, and flowers, and was placed near a building, especially in small enclosed areas (tsubo). The one at Sugawara Michizane's mansion, depicted in the scroll Kitanotenjin engi emaki, is a typical example.
