Ogawa Jihei
小川治兵衛

Ogawa Jihei

1860-1933. A gardener (niwashi) in Kyoto who played an important role from the middle Meiji to the early Shōwa periods. He was also called by his shop's name, Ueji. He was involved in building the Shin'en garden at Heian shrine in 1894-95, and Murin'an garden in 1894-97, in addition to many gardens for members of the imperial family and the nobility, and for wealthy merchants and famous persons. His garden works are found in Tokyo, Osaka, and elsewhere, in addition to Kyoto. His gardens are based on a naturalistic approach, and characteristically give no feeling of artifice.
