Murin'an teien
無隣庵庭園

Murin'an garden

The garden in the house built in Kyoto from 1894 to 1897 as the second residence of Yamagata Aritomo, a politician and general of the Meiji period. It was designed and supervised by Yamagata and executed by Ogawa Jihei. The important elements of the garden are the Higashiyama mountains as borrowed scenery, the pond and streams whose water is introduced from the Biwako conduit, and an open space covered with lawn. The modern and unconventional design, which made use of its location at the foot of the Higashiyama mountains, subsequently had great influence on gardens in Japan. It is designated a national scenic spot, and is located in Sakyō ward, Kyoto.
