Tairyūsansō teien
對龍山荘庭園

garden at Tairyūsansō

Tairyūsansō was built as a detached mansion of Ijūin Kanetsune in 1896, and was purchased by the Ichida family in 1901. The garden, first built during Ijūin's possession, was renovated by Ogawa Jihei into its present form between 1902 and 1905. Water drawn from the Biwako conduit is used for water-related scenery such as waterfalls, ponds, streams, and a water mill, and the Higashiyama mountains are used as borrowed scenery. The area around the tearoom is arranged as a tea garden, and lawn spreads over an area at one corner of the garden. It is well known among gardens of mansions in Kyoto from that period for its splendid composition, detailed design, and well-preserved condition. It is designated a national scenic spot, and located in Sakyō ward, Kyoto.
