The room for the tea ceremony. A special room has been prepared for this purpose since the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Those following the standard for the shoin are called "shoin style tearooms," those modeled after simple thatched dwellings are called "sōan style tearooms." The term is sometimes extended to a building which includes a tearoom.
