Kitabatake-shi yakataato teien
北畠氏館跡庭園

garden at the Kitabatake mansion site

A garden surviving at the mansion site of the Kitabatake family, Governors of the province of Ise. It is thought to have been designed and built by Hosokawa Takakuni, a deputy of the Muromachi shogunate, while he was staying there from about 1528 to 1531. The pond has a complicated shape, with stone shore edging and a tortoise island. There is an artificial hill to the east of the pond, and a bold dry landscape stone arrangement at its northern foot. The garden at the Kitabatake mansion site is designated a national scenic spot and historic site, and is located in the city of Tsu, Mie prefecture.
