Jōeiji teien
常栄寺庭園

garden at Jōeiji temple

Jōeiji temple was established in 1455. Its garden was also built about that time, and there is a legend that it was designed by the painter and priest, Sesshū. The garden to the north of the main hall is composed of a dry landscape near the building, and a pond garden on its far side. Sets of two to five stones are arranged in balanced fashion in the dry landscape, which gives the feel of a traditional landscape painting. There are two islands in the pond, and the stone arrangement of a dragon-gate waterfall is excellent. The garden of Jōeiji temple is designated a national historic site and scenic spot, and is located in the city of Yamaguchi.
