flower bed

Flower beds are less important in Japanese than in Western gardens. A flower bed is sometimes placed in the corner of a garden, however, especially as a stone-bordered rectangular area next to a building. A flower bed bordered with dressed stones was unearthed at the remains of the Asakura Yoshikage mansion (sixteenth century), one of the gardens of the Ichijōdani Ashikura-shi site, and there was a flower bed in the southern garden of Tsunegosho at Sanpōin of Daigoji temple according to the diary of Gien Jugō. Peony flowers were often planted in flower beds at that time.
