One of the key trees in the illustration of a "formal hill and pond garden" in Tsukiyamateizōden (kōhen). It is planted at the opposite side of the tree of solitude (sekizenboku) in the western part of the garden. Red-leafed trees such as the maple, or the redtop (Photinia glabra) are often used.
