nijū roji
二重露地

two-part tea garden


A style of tea garden composed of inner and outer sectors. This style was first made in the Momoyama period (late sixteenth century), and has been the most popular type of tea garden since the start of the Edo period (seventeenth century). The inner and outer sectors are divided by a fence and connected with a middle gate.
