Shukkeien
縮景園

Shukkeien garden

A detached mansion of the Hiroshima domain, built along the Kanda river at the beginning of the Edo period (seventeenth century). The garden was designed by tea master Ueda Sōko. There were many islands arranged in its central pond, Takueichi, at the center of which an arched stone bridge called Kokōkyō was placed. The view from the artificial hill Geiki-hō, to the east of Takueichi, of both the garden interior and the scenery outside, is superb. An example of the earliest phase of daimyo gardens, it is designated a national scenic spot, and is located in Naka ward, Hiroshima.
