Sengan'en
仙巌園

Sengan'en garden

A detached mansion of the lord of the Satsuma domain, built around 1660. It was subsequently renovated by successive lords. It is also called Isogoten (seaside palace), because of its location facing Kinkō bay. Its grand design, which is without parallel, likens the bay to a garden pond, and the sometimes active volcano Mt. Sakurajima to an artificial hill. The inscription "Senjingan" (千尋巌, meaning "huge rock"), incised on the cliff behind the mansion, is also unique. It is designated a national scenic spot, and located in the city of Kagoshima.
