reduced-scale landscape

A technique in which scenic spots or noted places are introduced in a garden on a reduced scale. There are cases of comparatively realistic reduction, and those which are symbolic. This technique was often used in daimyo gardens in the Edo period. The Ōi River, Tsūten bridge and Shiraito no taki waterfall of Kōrakuen garden in Tokyo are typical examples.
