Ōishi bugakuryū

Ōishibugaku gardening school

A school of gardening in Hirosaki, Aomori prefecture, which became popular through the encouragement of the feudal lord of the Tsugaru domain in the Edo period. It is characterized by techniques which place aesthetic appreciation above practical considerations, as in the use of large-sized ornamental stones and stepping stones. Gardens like Zuirakuen (Hirosaki) are examples of this style.
