Katsura gaki

Katsura hedge; Katsura fence


1. The hedge on the east side of the Katsura detached palace. It is made with numerous branches of live bamboo in the grove behind the hedge, which are bent and knit closely together.
2. The fence on both sides of the Miyuki gate at the Katsura detached palace. It is made of horizontally arranged bamboo branches, held between pieces of split bamboo and bound by ropes. It is also called takehogaki to distinguish it from Katsura hedge, def. 1.
