Kairakuen garden

A garden designed, supervised, and built by Tokugawa Nariaki, lord of the Mito domain, at the end of the Edo period (nineteenth century). He intended to open it to the public from the beginning. The garden is located on a hill to the southwest of Mito Castle, and commands a fine view of Mt. Tsukuba to the west and Lake Senba to the east. The view from Rakujurō, a name given the third floor of the main building Kōbuntei, is especially excellent. The plum grove in the northwest of the garden is also well known. Kairakuen garden is designated a national historic site and scenic spot, and is located in the city of Mito, Ibaraki prefecture.
