shuro nawa
棕櫚縄

hemp-palm rope

A rope made of fiber from the hemp palm, which has superior water resistance and durability. In Japan it was already used for gardening by the Muromachi period (sixteenth century). There are two types: one is brown, and the other is dyed black and called some nawa. The former is used for binding supports to a tree or for binding straw wrapping; the latter is used for binding in making a bamboo fence.
