Tenryūji teien
天龍寺庭園

garden at Tenryūji temple

Tenryūji temple was built from 1339 to 1345 by Ashikaga Takauji, with Musō Soseki as its founder. The garden was also made by Musō Soseki. The pond Sōgenchi was dug with the mountains Arashiyama and Kameyama as background, and the focus of the garden scenery is the superb waterfall stone arrangement at the center of its far shore, its stone shore edging and stone bridge, and the upright stones placed within the pond. These are all well known as excellent examples of stone arranging. The garden is designated a national historic site and special scenic spot, and is inscribed on the World Heritage List as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. It is located in Ukyō ward, Kyoto.
