Sentō gosho teien
仙洞御所庭園

garden at the Sentō palace

A remnant of the garden of the Sentō palace of Retired Emperor Go-Mizunoo, and also of the residence of his Empress Tōfukumon-in, surviving in the southeast corner of Kyoto gosho palace. It was built under the supervision of Kobori Enshū from 1634 to 1636. It was later extensively enlarged and renovated, and only a small part retains its original form. The garden is composed of ponds to the north and south, both of which have central islands. The stone-paved beach on the west bank of the southern pond is famous for its rich, beautiful scenery. It is located in Kamigyō ward, Kyoto.
