Aizu Matsudairashi teien
会津松平氏庭園

garden at the detached mansion of the Matsudaira family, lords of the Aizu domain

A garden built at the villa of the lords of the Aizu domain in the early Edo period (seventeenth century). It is also called Oyakuen (a term for "medicinal garden"), because a corner of the garden was used for growing herbs. It is said that the garden was arranged in 1696 as we now see it. A pond, the centerpiece of the garden, is supplied with water through two cascades, Otaki to the north and Metaki to the south, and the teahouse Rakujutei stands on the central island of the pond. The garden also uses the Higashiyama mountains as borrowed scenery. It is designated a national scenic spot, and located in the city of Aizu Wakamatsu, Fukushima prefecture.
