Manshuin teien
曼珠院庭園

garden at Manshuin temple

Manshuin is a monzeki temple (one originally founded as a residence for an imperial prince or other noble) belonging to the Tendai sect, with a dry landscape garden built in the early Edo period (seventeenth century). It has a definite composition formed by an upright stone representing a waterfall, and a river flowing among mountains of low artificial hills expressed by a stretch of white sand, which continues as a wide spread representing the ocean.  The Fukurō (owl) water basin set by the veranda is a famous masterpiece. It is designated a national scenic spot, and located in Sakyō ward, Kyoto.
