Kōdaiji teien
高台寺庭園

garden at Kōdaiji temple

Kōdaiji temple was built in 1605 by Kita no Mandokoro, Toyotomi Hideyoshi's wife, who lived there till her death in1624. It is not clear when the present garden was built, but it is thought to have been completed in stages after her death. Two ponds are located on the eastern and western sides of Kaizandō hall, and are spanned by roofed bridges. Two teahouses located on the hillside to the east, Shiguretei and Kasatei, are also important elements of the garden. It is designated a national scenic spot and historic monument, and located in Higashiyama ward, Kyoto.
