Hōjōji teien
法成寺庭園

garden at Hōjōji temple

Hōjōji was a temple built by Fujiwara no Michinaga to the east of his mansion Tsuchimikadodono. The Amida hall of the temple was built in 1020. It was the first Pure Land garden made with the intention of realizing the Pure Land of Amida Buddha in this world for one's own salvation. The details are not clear, though it can be supposed from the discription in Eiga monogatari that the temple was composed of Buddhist halls, including a main hall and the Amida hall, and the pond. It was located in Kamigyō ward, Kyoto.
