Erinji teien
恵林寺庭園

garden at Erinji temple

Erinji temple was built in 1330 with Musō Soseki as its founder. Although the garden is also said to have been built at that time, the entire temple burned down due to fighting in the sixteenth century, and the greater part of the present garden was rebuilt in the mid-Edo period (early eighteenth century). It is built as a hill and pond garden focused on a pond spreading north from the main hall, with water supplied by a cascade at the northwest edge, and a large central island placed in the middle. It is designated a national scenic spot, and located in the city of Kōshū, Yamanashi prefecture.
