garden (terms for)

Of the many Japanese terms translating as "garden," niwa 庭 and teien 庭園 are the most common general referents. Sono 園 may also refer broadly to a garden or gardens; in combination with other words, when usually read as zono or en, it can denote the type of garden (such as hanazono 花園, "flower park"), or form the name of a particular garden (e.g. Kōrakuen 後楽園). Historically, various garden components have served in different eras as referents for the garden itself: garden pond (enchi 園地), rinsen (林泉, lit. "trees and water"), senseki (泉石, lit. "water and stones"), body of water (sensui, 泉水), garden flora (senzai, 前栽), and mountain-and-water (sansui, 山水). Shima 島. and yado 屋戸 are archaic terms for garden..
