crane stone

An ornamental stone symbolizing a crane. It is paired with the tortoise stone. A thin stone set upright to depict the wing hane ishi), or a long and thin stone for the neck kakushuseki), is often used. Its adoption into the garden came after that of the tortoise stone, in the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
