Ashikaga Yoshimasa

1436-1490. Eighth shogun of the Muromachi bakufu. He was not skillful as a statesman, but is highly regarded as a patron of the arts. He was interested in garden construction, and built his villa Higashiyamadono (which later became the temple Jishōji, or Ginkakuji) taking Saihōji temple, which had been built by Musō Soseki, as its model.
