tea garden

An alternate name for chaniwa, the garden built in the open space between the waiting room and the tearoom. A tea garden was called tsubo no uchi in the time of Takeno Jōō (a late Muromachi period tea master), but came to be known as roji during Sen Rikyū's time, when the forms of the crouching basin arrangement, stepping stones, and so forth, developed. Later, the double tea garden consisting of inner and outer sectors, or a triple one adding an intermediate sector, appeared.
