Ichijōdani Asakura-shi iseki teiengun
一乗谷朝倉氏遺跡庭園群

gardens at the Ichijōdani Asakura-shi site

The Ichijōdani Asakura-shi site is located in the castle town of the Asakura family, feudal warlords from 1471 to 1573. There are remains of about ten gardens at this site. Three of these which have not been buried (those at the sites of Yudono, Suwa mansion, and Nan'yōji temple), and the excavated garden remains at the Yoshikage mansion site (photo), are important because of their direct connections with the Asakura family, and their good states of preservation. The gardens at the Yudono and Suwa mansion sites are pond gardens with powerful designs using many upright stones. The Nan'yōji temple site garden is a dry landscape garden. The Yoshikage mansion site garden, making good use of its location at the foot of a mountain, is an excellently designed pond garden with a waterfall stone arrangement. The gardens at the Ichijōdani Asakura-shi site have been designated national special scenic spots, and are located in the city of Fukui, Fukui prefecture.
