Nanzen'in teien
南禅院庭園

garden at Nanzen'in temple

Nanzen'in temple was built on the site of the detached palace of Emperor Kameyama at the end of the thirteenth century. The garden is a pond garden which takes full advantage of a spring, and of its location at the foot of a mountain. Although the pond's appearance must have changed due to natural sedimentation and artificial filling, the central island and waterfall stone arrangement are thought to maintain their original forms. It is designated a national historic site and scenic spot, and located in Sakyō ward, Kyoto.
