ike

pond

A hollow filled with water naturally, or filled artificially by digging the ground or building a bank. A garden pond is sometimes called enchi or chisen in Japanese. Some garden ponds were built in the Asuka period (seventh century), and from that time they have become the main element of the garden landscape.  Garden ponds are classified into square and curved ponds from their shape.
