REPORT of THE YAMANOUCHI SUGAO ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTION NUMBER 8

Incipient, Early, Late, and Final Jomon Artifacts; Tiles and Rooftiles of Early Historic East Asia

This series of catalogs publishes archaeological materials collected by the late Dr. YAMANOUCHI Sugao [1902-1970]. He was a prominent prehistorian who firmly established the methodological framework of investigations into Japanese prehistory, particularly the Jomon Period. His collection principally consists of archaeological data resulting from his own excavations at Jomon sites in eastern Japan.

This volume consists of two parts. The first half includes the incipient, early, late, and final Jomon artifacts, and the second half collects tiles and rooftiles of early historic east Asia. Although the Jomon artifacts published here are defining materials for each chronological stage of the Jomon Period, they have remained unpublished since Yamanouchi’s own excavations. The majority of the tiles and rooftiles were given to Yamanouchi by the Department of Anthropology at the Tokyo Imperial University where he taught for approximately twenty years. Particularly noteworthy are a tile with inscriptions meaning “the mausoleum of a great king” discovered near the stele of King Kwanggaet’o of Koguryo and eaves tiles of eighth century provincial temples of Japan erected under the order of Emperor Shomu.
